WEBP to JPG: what the conversion actually does

Converting WEBP to JPG re-encodes the picture with JPEG's DCT compression. The visible image is preserved; what is discarded is WEBP-specific data — any transparency (replaced with a white background), animation frames after the first, and the WEBP container itself. The result opens in anything: Windows Photos, Preview, Word, Photoshop, eBay, older phones.

How to convert WEBP to JPG

  1. 1Drop your .webp files onto the box above — one, or a few hundred at a time.
  2. 2Pick a quality level. 85-92 is the usual sweet spot; below 70 you start to see blocking around hard edges and text.
  3. 3Convert, then download the files individually or as a single ZIP.

Why so many sites hand you a WEBP you cannot use

WEBP is Google's image format, and since around 2020 most large sites serve it to any browser that will accept it because it is roughly 25-30% smaller than an equivalent JPEG. Your browser displays it happily. The trouble starts the moment the file leaves the browser: you right-click, Save image as, and end up with a .webp on your desktop that Windows Photo Viewer, older versions of Photoshop, most printing services, many CMS uploaders and plenty of marketplace listing forms will refuse.

That is the entire problem this page solves. WEBP is a fine format for delivering images to browsers and a poor format for handing files to other software. JPG is the opposite — bigger on the wire, accepted everywhere.

What actually changes in the file

Because both formats are lossy, a WEBP to JPG conversion is a second generation of lossy compression. At quality 90 that is invisible on photographs. On screenshots, logos and anything with crisp text it is worth converting to PNG instead, which is lossless.

Choosing a quality setting

  • 95-100 — archival or further editing. Files get large fast and the visual gain over 92 is very hard to see.
  • 85-92 — the default for photos going anywhere real: email, listings, print-at-home, social.
  • 70-84 — web pages where page weight matters more than pixel-perfect detail.
  • Below 70 — only for thumbnails. Edges become blocky and flat areas band.

Privacy

Nothing is uploaded. The file is decoded and re-encoded by your own browser using the Canvas API, so the image never leaves your device and there is no queue, no size cap and no account.

Three mistakes to avoid

Converting a transparent logo and getting a white box

JPG has no alpha channel, so transparency has to become some colour, and that colour is white. If the logo is going on a coloured background, convert to PNG instead.

Converting an animated WEBP

A still format cannot hold an animation. You get frame one. Convert to GIF or keep the WEBP if the motion matters.

Re-saving the same JPG over and over

Every JPG save is a fresh round of lossy compression. Keep one master file and export from it rather than converting a converted file.

WebP is a modern image format by Google with superior compression. Converting to JPG ensures maximum compatibility.

You control quality with our slider. At 85-100%, quality loss is virtually imperceptible.

Yes! Enable the file size target option and set a max KB. Quality auto-adjusts to fit.

No. Renaming changes the label, not the data — the file is still WEBP inside, and apps that reject WEBP will still reject it or call it corrupt. Converting re-encodes the pixels as a real JPEG, which is what the tool above does.

For serving images on a website, WEBP usually wins because the files are smaller at the same visual quality. For sharing, editing, printing and uploading to other apps, JPG is the safer choice because virtually everything opens it. Our WEBP vs JPG guide compares them in detail.

JPG supports neither. Transparent areas are filled with white, and an animated WEBP keeps only its first frame. To keep transparency convert WEBP to PNG; to keep the animation convert WEBP to GIF.

Yes. The converter runs in any modern browser, so it works the same on Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, iPhone and Android with nothing to install.
